It's SNOWING!!! Actually, it's pretty much been snowing/raining/sleeting since last night, but it is finally accumulating. We've gotten quite the little storm here today and it is incredibly gorgeous! Hopefully the few photos below can sort of capture what I am seeing today! I played around with the colors of the photos because the snow makes it so bluish/white and the photos look dull. Right now, everything looks bright blue outside! It is incredible! Isn't nature awesome?!

This is a shot of our front yard leading to the road. I love these big saggy trees!

This little barn sits next to the big barn right outside of our house. You can tell the snow is blowing in one direction out there since just the front of it is covered in snow. I love this barn!

I did a little sepia treatment on this tree, which is in our back yard right outside of our basement.

I am standing in our living room looking at the front door here. This is just to show you how everything looks from the inside. I love having so many windows in the house! We honestly rarely turn on the lights during the day.

This is my favorite window in the house because it lets so much light into our kitchen. I also love the view : )
Stay warm and safe in the snow everyone!

Week 2: FOOD!

I absolutely love food and have grown to love cooking!! That is, as long as my handsome husband cleans up : ) So this week was especially fun trying to capture food in different ways. It was tougher than I thought in some situations, but I think I got some fun shots. I know I have a long way to go with food photography, so it was fun to practice this week. I hope you enjoy a snapshot of the food I encounter throughout the week!

I made some homemade chicken soup last weekend. Although it was wondefully delicious and beautiful to look at, the camera did not capture it well. Since I served the soup with crackers, I figured I'd get a shot of them. I love this shot because this is how I happened to open the box and the sleeve of crackers. I did have to crop it a bit in post-processing because you could see too much window and wall.

These are the main ingredients in my breakfast most days. Oatmeal with berries, walnuts and some honey paired with a wonderful glass of raw milk (yes, straight from the cow!!).

This is a snapshot of a typical lunch at work. I eat at my desk most days and just take a breather from all of the action going on outside the door of my office! love spinach salads and I have been topping them with apples since strawberries went out of season. This was such an easy shot to get because there is a window behind me and the light was just right! Since it turned out so well, I didn't have to do a thing to it edit wise except crop it. It's what they call SOOC: straight out of camera.

We have some dear friends here in town who live very close to the land. They make everything from scratch and it is always delicious! They are also the nicest people I've ever met : ) Here is a shot of their homemade granola with a beautiful wooden spoon.

The apple section at Food Lion was calling my name when I was there the other day. I think this photo could be improved in so many ways, but I'm not sure how! If you have a suggestion, feel free to leave it in the comments! I'm still playing with my new editing software and haven't quite figured out how I could have made this one better.

Every morning, I pack a lunch for both my husband and I. Yes, it is quite a feat to get us out the door in the morning between making breakfast, packing lunches and trying to plan for dinner! I have no idea what we'll do once we have kids! Here are our cute lunchboxes I pack for us to take to work every day!

The scrambled eggs and English muffins with jelly were excellent! You can see out to our side yard in the background of this picture and just might be able to make out the barn between the chair pickets. We have a huge six foot picture window behind our table in the kitchen. It lets in incredible light!!! Although it needs to be cleaned desperately, it still gives us a great view : )

Check back next Sunday for Week Three!

Project 27- Week One

Week one theme: ME
My first week of Project 27 was a little tougher than I was anticipating. I ran into a few issues and was challenged more than once! I realized that it is so much harder to take pictures of things than it is to photograph people. I'm happy with my final photos, but I guess I was expecting it to be so much easier to get them! This first set of photos will give you a little peek into my daily life. Let me know what you think!

This is me on my way into work on my birthday...I drive 100 miles a day to and from work so I often have this look on my face!

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011
Here's my honey! This is what I wake up to every morning. I'd like to point out that the cream colored pillow in the background is his pillow...he likes to sleep on my pillow once I get up in the morning : )

I work at JMU in the Office of Residence Life. The department gave out these silly "Spirit Mittens" to all of the staff and they sure have come in handy! I wear them while driving most days to keep my fingers toasty.

I love working out! I try to do it daily, but since we moved into the cabin in October, I haven't really had a proper area to do that. So for my birthday my honey bought this black mat for me to use and cleared an area in the basement for me. He also bought me the kettlebell and then set up my area with all of my other stuff for me as a surprise!

This is our beautiful cabin! It took two and a half years to complete, but we couldn't be happier : )

Check back next Sunday for Week Two!

Project 27- first day down! 364 more to go!!

I officially embarked on my year-long photography project yesterday! (check out my fun logo I made for the project!!) My first week's theme is: ME! I figured it would be appropriate to capture things about me and people close to me to start the year off. Next year I'll be able to look back and see what was important to me at this time in my life.

Since I won't be posting my first week's photos until Sunday, I figured I'd share some I took this past Sunday. I had to meet up with a friend after church so I took these photos when I was killing some time in an area of town I don't go to much. Then I had some fun playing with them in my new photo editing software I got: Pixelmator. Hope you enjoy them!

Stay tuned for some photos of our house renovation project coming soon!

project 27

On Tuesday, I will be turning 27!

In honor of this oh-so-special day, I am embarking on something I will be calling 'project 27.' Every day during my 27th year until my 28th birthday in 2012, I will be taking a photo and posting it on here. Some of you have probably heard of this type of thing, usually called something like "Photo 365." It will be very similar to this; however, I will be posting a week's worth of photos every Sunday, not every day since I work full time and commute an hour home each night and have to make dinner for my hubby....yaddy yaddy ya!

Because I like lists and structure, I have mapped out my year by assigning each week its own theme. Instead of just capturing my day to day life by taking a photo at some point during the day, I really want to challenge myself to take more artistic photos and put some thought into them. The Sunday posts on here will each contain 7 photos representing the theme somehow.

I have three main goals in doing this project.
1. Become a better photographer
I'm sure this is probably a goal for most people who do this type of thing, but I really want to try to get a little more creative with my shots. I have learned so much since June when I first got my DSLR. I took time to look at what others do and really dove into more artistic photography, rather than just capturing what was going on around me (as I had done with my point and shoot cameras). I want to continue learning more about photography, letting it become a part of me, not just something I like to do.
2. Become more disciplined
The idea of having to keep up with something for more than a few weeks is a little scary to me right now. I do regular workouts each week, but what I do completely changes week to week. Same with dinner...I am constantly searching for new recipes. I tend to find something I like and will think about it and research it nonstop for a few weeks just until I find something else to think about! Through 'project 27,' I am really going to have to be disciplined about taking my camera everywhere, loading the pictures on my computer, making edits, and writing about each picture to post on here each week. I am hoping it will help me to gain some focus for this and for other areas of my life.
3. See new things
In giving myself themes to follow, I am hoping it will challenge me to look at things differently. I made the themes easy enough that I will hopefully be able to find things/people/places to photograph close to home and work. What this means, however, is that I will need to look at my surroundings from a different perspective. I feel as though I am in such a routine that I barely notice my surroundings anymore, let alone see the beauty that encompasses where I live and work. I am hoping I will be challenged to see new things and see things in a new way.

I really hope you'll stay with me throughout the next year as I take this project on! If you've completed a project like this, I would love some tips/advice/guidance!! I would love to read comments about your experiences and ideas for photos!

And now to leave you with one of my favorite photos that I feel really captures the beauty I see daily (and is a very stark contrast to the snow I am currently seeing out the window of my kitchen!)

Christmas 2010

This year, we changed things up a bit and did Christmas Eve dinner in our new home (a future post about the 2 1/2 year renovation project will be coming soon!) instead of up at my in-laws. My whole family came in for it from all over the country: Nick and Jessi from Minnesota, Michael and Cezanne from New York, and mom and dad from North Carolina. This was the first time my whole family had been together since our wedding a year and a half ago. My mother-, father-, brother-, aunt-, and grandma-in-law also came from a mile up the road. It was so exciting to see everyone and spend some quality time with family, especially my brothers! It was also exciting because Nick and Jessi got to find out the sex of their baby (see their maternity pictures below!).

Here are some pictures from Christmas Eve day when we opened presents and Christmas Eve dinner where I (with a lot of help from many other people!) successfully cooked dinner and dessert for 14 people! It was such an awesome day! And also a few family photos from Christmas Day.

Nick, me and Michael full of holiday cheer!

My whole family at my parents house on Christmas! Me, my hubby, my brothers, Jessi, Dad and Momma

Nick and I before serving dinner. And dad doing dishes in the background! He was instrumental in the clean up effort after dinner...THANKS DAD!!!

The 10+ foot table that sat all 14 of us! It was beautifully decorated by Jessi, and the wonderful Spode Christmas Tree plates were provided by my wonderful mother-in-law. Thanks Nancy!

Unfortunately, no one captured a photo of all of us at the table.

Nick and Jessi opening their gift!! What does it say?!?!

IT'S A GIRL!!! The ultrasound technician printed them a picture and put it in a box at their ultrasound in early December. They wrapped it up and brought it all the way to VA to open in front of us for Christmas so we could share in their joy!

Super excited future parents! And happy future Grandpa!!! We all can't wait to meet the little girl : )
